Errata

Ken Croswell's books are rigorously fact-checked by the author and then carefully proofread by the author and by an independent proofreader, who compares each word to its counterpart in the original manuscript. Nevertheless, a few errors have appeared in published books:

The Alchemy of the Heavens: Page 113: Fred Hoyle states that he coined "big bang" in 1950. Although he certainly used the term that year, he appears to have first used it in 1949. As Hoyle explains on pages 113-14, and as is misreported in many places, Hoyle did not intend "big bang" to be derogatory: "There was no way in which I coined the phrase to be derogatory; I coined it to be striking, so that people would know the difference between the steady state model and the big bang model."

Pages 254-55: Due to an editor's error, some copies misspell Aleksander Wolszczan's last name. In 1991, Wolszczan and Dale Frail discovered the first planets around another star, PSR B1257+12.

Planet Quest: Page 42: George Airy's words, expressing pessimism that Neptune could be found by studying the motions of Uranus, should read, "If it be the effect of any unseen body, it will be nearly impossible ever to find out its place." Due to an author error, some copies of Planet Quest invert the order of "ever" and "to."

Magnificent Mars: Page 128: Due to an author error, Philip Christensen's university is incorrect. He is at Arizona State University. In 2003, he proposed a theory to explain how gullies on Mars may be created when Martian snow melts.
